Just wanted to say that I really loved this piece. I was saying in the discussion that I thought it really exemplified how virtuosity can be combined with activity-based performance. I think the labor of washing the yellow ribbon provides a kind of foundation for the vocal performance, and calls attention to how the singing is both beautiful and “artistic” and at the same time also a durational labor. I'm suspicious sometimes of my tendency to romanticize durational, activity performance, but I think this piece shows how well it can work. A lot of virtuoso performers “make it look so easy,” but Nicole makes singing very, productively, UNeasy.
